Mustafa A. Hares, MD, FACS
Dr. Hares is a member of the bariatric surgical team at St. John Weight Loss Center. He specializes in several types of bariatric surgery, including biliopancreatic diversion (BPD) duodenal switch, open Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, and revisional bariatric surgery. He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery. Dr. Hares earned his medical degree from Damascus (Syria) University Medical School, then completed residencies in general surgery at Christ Hospital, Oaklawn, Illinois (St. Luke’s Presbyterian University Program) and the North Oakland Medical Centers, Pontiac, Michigan (U-M Surgery Program). He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and International College of Surgeons, as well as a member of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery and the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity.
Abdelkader A. Hawasli, MD, FACS
Dr. Hawasli is the director of Laparoscopic Surgery and the Minimally Invasive Surgery Center at St. John Hospital and Medical Center. Dr. Hawasli pioneered laparoscopic removal of the gallbladder in 1989. Other minimally invasive laparoscopic procedures he has performed include laparoscopic band placement (LAP-BAND) for morbid obesity, sleeve gastrectomy, removal of the gallbladder, appendix, spleen, adrenal gland and colon; and repair of groin hernia and hiatal hernia. In addition, he has performed anti-reflux procedures for heartburn (GERD), kidney removal for transplant, and radio-frequency ablation of unresectable liver cancers. He has been board certified in general surgery since 1986, and was recognized in 2004 and 2005 as one of the region’s most respected general surgeons in Hour Detroit magazine’s annual “Top Docs” ranking. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).
Gary R. Katz, DO
A specialist in general surgery, Dr. Katz is Medical Director of the bariatric surgical team at St. John Weight Loss Center and performs the laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and laparoscopic band placement (LAP-BAND). He received his medical degree from the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences, Des Moines, Iowa, and completed both his internship and his residency at Oakland General Hospital in Madison Heights, MI. He is certified by the American Board of Osteopathic Surgeons. Additionally he is a member of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons, the American Osteopathic Association, the Michigan State Medical Society, the Oakland County Medical Society and the American Society of Bariatric Surgeons. He is in practice with Oakland Macomb Surgical Group in Madison Heights, MI.
Kerry L. Kole, DO
Dr. Kole has a special interest in weight loss surgery, bariatric surgery, laparoscopic adjustable banding, laparoscopic gastric bypass, advanced laparoscopic surgery, general and emergency surgery and is fellowship-trained in trauma and critical care. In addition, Dr. Kole is Program Director of St. John Detroit Riverview Hospital’s General Surgery residency program. He is board certified in general surgery and has a special interest in weight loss surgery. Among the types of bariatric surgery he performs are laparoscopic band placement (LAP-BAND), laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, revision and conversion. He has performed more than 700 bariatric procedures, both open and laparoscopic. He is a graduate of Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, and has been an assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at Michigan State University. He has authored more than 20 scientific articles and book chapters and is a fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons (FACOS) and a member of the American Society of Bariatric Surgeons.
Ahmed A, Meguid, MD
Dr. Meguid is a general surgeon who specializes in advanced laparoscopic surgical procedures, including laparoscopic band placement (LAP-BAND). He earned his medical degree from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, and completed a general surgical residency at William Beaumont Hospital and a fellowship at St. John Hospital and Medical Center. He also has pursued advanced training in laparoscopic surgery and performs a wide variety of laparoscopic procedures. He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery, and is in practice with Eastside Surgical Specialists, PC, in St. Clair Shores.
Alfred J. Schneider, MD, FACS
Dr. Schneider is a graduate of the Wayne State University School of Medicine and completed a surgical residency at Mt. Carmel Mercy Hospital, Detroit. He is chief of staff elect at St. Joseph’s Medical Center, Clinton Township. His specialty is general surgery, and he is board certified by the American Board of Surgery. Dr. Schneider has performed more than 15,000 surgical procedures, including laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgery. He has a special interest in laparoscopic bariatric surgery including both Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and LAP-BAND procedures. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), and a member of the American Society of General Surgeons and Michigan Society of General Surgeons. He has been recognized in the “Top Docs” ranking by Hour Detroit magazine. He is in private practice with Surgical Associates of Macomb in Clinton Township.
David M. Siegel, DO, FACOS
Dr. Siegel is part of the bariatric surgical team at St. John Weight Loss Center and specializes in open Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. Dr. Siegel earned his medical degree from University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences, Des Moines, Iowa, and completed both his residency and internship at Oakland General Hospital in Madison Heights. He is board certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery. He is chief of staff at St. John Oakland Hospital, and was previously program director of General Surgery Resident and chief of the division of General Surgery. In addition, he is an assistant clinical professor in the department of Osteopathic Medicine at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and Fellow of the American Osteopathic College of Surgeons (FACOS).
